Eating Out Gluten, Soy and Dairy Free
Eating out has been one of the most difficult challenges for me since I had to change my lifestyle of being gluten, soy, and dairy free. Even worse is attending social events and seeing everyone enjoying all that great food while I am savoring my delicious celery stick! I don't want to be left out of any type of social event nor have people scared to ask me if I'd like to go to dinner or lunch because they think I can't eat anything at that restaurant.
Sidetrack! Wishing to actually revise the outdated look for my current site. Reactions regarding the sharp design of http://www.showersandmore.com/? Unquestionably an accomplished Ontario based shower hardware wholesaler when required inside the whole Ontario area. Send your vote. Thanks!
After many tears and a lot of frustrations about this I have finally found ways to deal with it. It is still hard for me but knowing the consequences when I do eat something I shouldn't makes it a lot less tempting. When you begin to feel better, it's much easier for you to stay away from the stuff that your body can not tolerate. So hang in there!
Here are some tips and tricks to jump this hurdle of attending social gatherings and eating out.
- Do NOT be ashamed of your food intolerances.
This is what I struggle with the most. I don't like making other people feel uncomfortable or that they have to cater to me. I would become embarrassed or almost feel like I am inconveniencing the other person. Also, I don't enjoy going through my medical history with people I barely know. People tend to ask too many questions and it can get quite annoying. I have since learned to take control of the situation because it's MY health that is my concern. I have come to terms that there will be people who do not understand or get it. Do not feel like you have to explain yourself. They don't have to get it. You do what's best for you and your health.
- When going out to eat, do not be afraid to let the waitress/waiter know that you do have several food allergies concerns upfront.
They NEED to be aware of this. If your waitress does not seem to want to cooperate ask to speak with the manager. If you're anything like me you do not want to let an ignorant waitress/waiter ruin your night by serving you something that could be harmful to your body causing it to have a reaction. To be honestI have only had one terrible experience at a restaurant where the chef was very aggravated with my food allergies. If you remain calm and polite you will typically get a polite reaction back. I have even been asked to come back into the kitchen to check for myself if everything is okay. While I was a bit embarrassed I was still very pleased that they took me that seriously.
- If you can't find something on the menu that you are able to eat do not be scared to discuss options that may not be on the menu.
There have been restaurants that have made up a completely new dish just for me. You are normally safe to order a salad with baked chicken and plain oil/vinegar dressing. Or you can order baked chicken/fish/steak, grilled/sauted veggies and rice/potato. DO NOT be afraid to ask. Most restaurants do have these ingredients on hand and are willing to accommodate. You just have to have open dialog with your waiter/the chef/manager.
If you are going to an event where there is food and you're not sure if you will be able to eat something make sure you eat ahead of time and bring your own snacks.
Have handy snacks in your purse or car and make sure to ALWAYS eat something ahead of time. I have no shame in whipping out a banana/apple, protein bar (be on the lookout for a good recipe), or even one of the Oatmeal Muffins to Go.
Remember YOU are in control of your health. Do not be ashamed of your lifestyle or how you are choosing to take back your health. You have the right to live a normal, healthy life just as much as the next person. Learn to embrace your lifestyle choice to better health and be comfortable with it.
**Remember: Stay strong and love your body enough to do what's best for it!
